He formed The Jackson 5 with his four older brothers and officially entered the music industry in 1969, launching an illustrious career that has now spanned more than 40 years. In 1969, introduced by the mayor to Diana Ross, who was performing in the city, the Jackson 5 met Motown head Berry Gordy and signed with the label. At the end of the year, they released their first single, “I Want You Back,” which quickly topped the charts. The Jackson 5 then embarked on a brilliant career spanning more than two decades, producing hit songs such as “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” In 1979, Michael released Off The Wall, his first album with Epic Records and the first produced for him by Quincy Jones. It was met with widespread acclaim and remained on the Billboard chart until 1984. The first single, “Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,” written by Michael himself, topped the charts and won him his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. Then, “Rock With You” spent four consecutive weeks at No. 1 in 1983. The two singles sold over a million copies, and each subsequent single reached the Top 10, giving the album four Top 10 singles—a first for any artist on the Billboard chart. Off The Wall was named Billboard magazine’s Best Soul Album of 1980, while Michael was named the magazine’s Soul Singles Artist of the Year. 1983 was Michael’s most defining year: he won eight awards at the 26th Grammy Awards out of 12 nominations, becoming the first artist ever to win the most awards in a single year as a solo artist. For the album Thriller, he won Best Producer, Best Album, Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male, and Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male, for the single “Billy Jean,” among others. The album also set a record with seven Top 10 singles and swept the pop charts, selling more than 40 million copies—a feat unmatched to this day. The “Thriller” music video, filmed at a cost of $10 million, was shown on a music television channel on March 2, 1983, and drew an audience of 10 million households, paving the way for MTV’s later dominance of the popular music market and the growing importance of music video promotion. Since his debut, Michael has received the highest honors, including 12 Grammy Awards. The American Music Awards and the Grammys each presented him with a Special Achievement Award and a Legend Award in 1989 and 1993, respectively.
