The Tragedian The Tragedian

Tragedy is often closer to reality than joy. It needs no thunderous applause; a tragic actor can stand alone. Emily, a melodic rapper beloved by the younger generation, takes the perspective of a “tragic actor” on her new album, Tragic Actor, unpacking the “tragedies” and “actors” in everyday life. In these scenarios, everyone can find a reflection of themselves. Perhaps we have all been tragic actors, conflicted with ourselves onstage.

The album opens with the melodic track “Spotlight,” like a real life that is always online, with no moment to come offstage. Next, the two uptempo dance tracks “Tragic Actor” and “Box Office Poison” bring out the striking tension between joy and sorrow. In the latter half of the album, songs such as “B copy” and “Pause” follow the story to reveal the protagonist’s innermost thoughts, as they continue to play their part in the musical called life.

The album’s style is varied yet fluid, much like the shifting scripts actors perform. Alongside powerful rhythms, Emily expresses herself with greater introspection, blending her understanding of Mandopop to create one heartfelt song after another. It brings to mind the Mandopop scene of the 2000s, when every love song was a classic tragic actor in its own right.
